This was a game with great potential for suspense. There was also several points where I had to resort to reading a walkthrough on the Internet to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Unfortunately, the game starts to go downhill from the moment you get hold of your first weapon: There are several shooting sections where you have to gun down the monsters before they shoot back or claw into you - Not really in the spirit of Call of Cthulhu. Instead there is a strong focus on Innsmouth. #Call of cthulhu x box series#I was hoping there would be a series of linked, but separate investigations. I imagined that there would be occult books to read, strange spells to learn and that like the roleplaying game, the creatures would be tough so you would have to avoid them or learn some spell to defeat them. Having played the roleplaying game of HP Lovecraft's world, I was hoping for a game that was more about your investigative skills and your ability to keep the character sane. In short, this is a game which starts out with a promising Cthulhu investigation feel, before turning into a standard first person shoot-em up. I've always loved his stories and didn't think anyone could make a decent Lovecraft game, but here it is. There is a Mythos level too, which I can only imagine is way hard! We've been playing it on Boy Scout level, and it's pretty challenging. Overall it is difficult, but just enough to keep you on edge. Oh, and the main theme music is great, evil and mystery combined. The flashback sequences to the asylum are v cool and the 'visions' (including monster's POV shots) amp up the fear immensely. The graphics brilliantly convey a black/brown world of rust and blood. The whole game oozes atmosphere (as well as black slime) and the lack of HUD only pulls you deeper into the character. v poor design guys.Īfter the fishmen things go alot smoother (and alot less frenetic), and you can take time to appreciate the foreboding atmosphere and dark, murderous story - told via found evidence and journal entries. But I was close to giving up on the game entirely after 15 goes. It took me and my girlfriend about 20 goes to finally nail it. It is a real shame the designers didn't tweak this part (or make the jumps easier) as I can see it putting off many gamers from persevering with the game. I would happily give it five stars if it wasn't for the first, extremely frustrating action scene, where you are chased by the Fishmen. It perfectly captures the Lovecraft mood of subterranean evil.
